Masters/Adult Swim

What is Masters?
Masters Swim is an organized program of coached structured swimming workouts for adults over 18 years of age.

Why swim in a Masters program?

There are many reasons! Firstly, it is much more fun & enjoyable to share your workouts with other swimmers rather than to log endless, boring laps in the gym pool. Master swimmers have the benefit of a coach’s years of experience. A coach can design interesting & challenging workouts and in help the swimmer become more efficient in the water through the use of drills and feedback for technique improvement. Having other swimmers in the pool with you naturally leads to friendly competitiveness, camaraderie, and a supportive team environment.

Who swims Masters?
All types of people; men, women, old, young, those with no competitive experience, seasoned triathletes, people who want to get in shape, former competitive swimmers and water polo players, novice triathletes, professional/Olympic athletes. In other words, anyone who can swim 2 lengths of the pool (50 yards) freestyle stroke & is interested in a fun, challenging workout in the water is a candidate for Masters swim, regardless of previous experience.

What is a workout like?
Each workout is structured to give a warm-up, a drill set to practice specific techniques, a main set of intervals, a kicking set which works the legs, and a warm down. Each day has a different emphasis: Mondays and Thursdays concentrate on distance freestyle; Tuesdays and Wednesdays have a stroke (butterfly, backstroke, breastroke or IM) emphasis; and Fridays are short-distance (sprint) freestyle.
Each workout is 90 minutes long & the fastest swimmers cover anywhere from 3900-4800 yards.

I’m not sure that I’m in good enough shape to swim that far. Also, I can’t come to every workout. Can I still join?

Certainly! There is flexibility in the program to accommodate those who are getting back into shape. Each workout is designed so that swimmers of different speeds can workout together.
Also, we recognize that people lead busy lives. Jobs, family commitments and other activities compete with your swim workout time. If you have to come late, leave early or skip a day, we understand.

Do Masters compete?
Yes, they can if they desire to, but it is not necessary. There are opportunities for pool swims of different distances and strokes, open water swims, triathlons and our TMEC Home Meets.

I don’t understand this lingo; intervals, sets, drills, stroke emphasis. What are you talking about?
Like any activity, swimming has its own language or lingo. When the coach gives a workout & you don’t understand something, just ask! But to get you started, TMEC has compiled a Swim Vocabulary list at : http://www.teamunify.com/SubTabGeneric.jsp?team=wzscstsc&_stabid_=22475

What equipment do I need?
