Mike has been involved in aquatics his entire
life starting out in New Zealand. He has taught learned to swim
classes in New Zealand and the US. He is a Red Cross certified
Lifeguard, Water Safety Instructor and first Aid/CPR responder.
Mike holds a bachelor of education degree from the University of
Auckland and has had two years classroom teaching
experience.
Mike's introduction to competitive swimming was
that age 11 with Tamaki City Swim Club and then later with Parnell
Swim Club which was the premier age group team and where he
remained for the rest of his age group swimming career. Over the
course of his age group career Mike enjoyed many successes
including winning Auckland City Championships setting National Age
Group Records and going on to represent his city at their New
Zealand Age Group Championships and Australian Major Championships.
The high point of his career was being selected to represent New
Zealand at an Age Group International meet.
When Mike was 14 years old he suffered a
shoulder injury that would hinder his ability to train at full
capacity for the next five years. He finished swimming at the age
of 20 after swimming for a year at the Dunedin -based swim club
Neptune and competing in the 1998 New Zealand National Open
Championship where he finished with personal bests in all events.
The things Mike enjoyed the most about swimming were pushing
himself to his limit every practice racing fast at meets and having
fun with his teammates.
When Mike is not coaching you might find him
planning the next workout, reading at Temecula duck pond, working
out in the gym, singing, swimming the occasional masters work out
or eating out with his fiancée. He is currently looking
forward to his wedding in May of 2010 and is training for the San
Diego rock and roll Marathon in June 2010. Michael lives with his
wonderful lady Merin in Menifee.
